When Kindness Isn't Enough

Bible Reading: Isaiah 26:10

Receiving help or favor doesn't automatically change your heart. God's kindness is meant to lead to repentance, but it requires a response. I'm not here to accuse you—I'm here to provoke you to ask: Where did the help come from?

Romans 26:10 (AMP): Though the wicked is shown compassion and favor, he does not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness he deals unjustly and refuses to see the majesty of the Lord.

My coworker, Marcus, called me because his truck had been towed again, his rent was late, and he needed "just one more favor." I had already covered his repair bill back in March and bought him a month of groceries in July. I didn't hesitate. I paid his tow fee, drove him to get his car; heck, I even sat down with him to create a budget. Now, here we go three weeks later, Marcus was right back in the same spot. When I asked what had changed, he just shrugged: "Man, I just have bad luck." I went home with a question that wouldn't leave me: "I gave him help. Why didn't he ever ask where the help was coming from?"
